Chain Pull Butterfly -

Mixed Media Abstract Art 🦋

Acrylic Pouring Tutorial by Olga Soby

Acrylic Pour Painting - Fluid Art Idea

Welcome to the new Chain Pull Butterfly – Mixed Media Abstract Art tutorial. Let’s create a super contrasty joyous chain pull butterfly! And for this Mixed Media Art Project, I want it to be a side view butterfly with a little flower in a corner. So this butterfly is landing on a flower. This is a commission abstract painting and it’s going to be all full of really vibrant summery colors.

“Joyous Flutter” is a secret message for this pour painting. I really want it to be very happy, airy, and joyous. This time I’m working on a 16 by 16 inches cradled wood panel and really don’t need a lot of paint for this size. For the base, I want it to be very light and airy, primarily white with a couple of other colors like a little bit of turquoise, blue, a little bit of light yellow maybe a touch of pink. These colors are beautiful, so delicate together.

Acrylic Pouring RECIPE used for today’s flow art painting:

Acrylic paint is mixed with water only to a fluid consistency. I add approximately 30-50% of water to my colors. There is no exact % or proportion because this ratio depends on initial paint viscosity, which significantly varies from brand to brand and even from color to color.

Also, I want to have a couple of splashes of green towards the bottom. So a little filled greens at the bottom, a little sunshine at the top – just the perfect background for my chain pull butterfly. The next step, I’m going to work on the layout of the butterfly. And for the layout, I’m going to use just a black color so it’s going to be very contrasting. For the colors inside of the butterfly, I want to use some orange, green, yellow, and a touch of turquoise. Also, I want to have a couple of metallic and iridescent accents. I think that will look good. For creating a side view butterfly, it’s very important to first create one wing that’s behind, do the chain pull and only then proceed to the front because otherwise, you will just smudge your color. And without further ado let’s see how this creative abstract art idea turned out!

I am super proud of this fluid artwork. She is easily one of my most favorite butterflies I have ever done. I also love that this pour painting is such a combination of different techniques. So there is dirty pour in the background, chain pull for the butterfly, of course, and some blown elements in a flower and in the grass. And they’re all very different, very different styles and elements yet they work amazing together. And for this fluid painting, I used just paint and water mixture. It worked differently for me, for the chain pull technique but it worked very well. So I’m definitely going to use this mixture again. I hope you enjoyed the process and looking forward to hearing from you! Happy creating!
